When looking at Chanel’s ‘Talking Patterns’ work, I felt excited by the developments she has made since the previous task.
Each piece is very cohesive, and whilst the link to the previous task is clear, the use of pattern enhances the subject matter and compliments it. Chanel has used a range of media to achieve these results, which I feel has allowed her to become more free and expressive within her work. She mentioned that she struggled with the urge to make each drawing perfect, however within these pieces I think it is clear that she overcame that urge. Mark making appears in the majority of these pieces, through which Chanel captures the detail of her subject matters, whilst still being experimental and loose with her drawing.
The colours within these patterns are even more refined and cohesive than in the previous task, flowing from one drawing to the next, exhibiting a clear sense of personal style despite the use of different mediums. The colours are fun and playful, Chanel is once again taking mundane, every day objects, and turning them into something exciting and interesting.
I particularly like the acrylic paintings, as I said in my previous comment, the way the colours melt together compliments Chanel’s style. I think within these pieces, the colour palettes are perfect, and are further complimented by the textures within each individual brush stroke.
Overall, I can see that exploration of media has allowed Chanel to develop a really strong personal style. she has cleverly selected colours that compliment and contrast each other, drawing out key textures and details and presenting these in creative ways. The patterns are cohesive and balanced.
