Ashley Li-Talking colour

When creating my 10 initial drawings, I decided to do most when I was sat at Brick Lane. I found this difficult because I would end up spending too much time on one drawing. When I realised this was happening I started to be more expressive with the marks I was making. I found that I did my most successful drawings when I didn’t expect to create something amazing but was just experimenting. There were medias I used that I found easier to be more expressive with like crayons and chalk. I found these two medias helped me portray the spray painted look that I observed at Brick Lane. It was challenging for me to do some of the pieces that have more detail just from observation. To overcome this I took pictures of the pieces of street art that interested me the most and worked into the into my drawings at home. Another challenge I overcame was using colour. Usually I stick to neutral tones when I am doing anything creative. I was hesitant at first But I found working with different coloured paper such as black forced me to use colour more freely. I also found that when I first went to Brick Lane for this task, I processed all the colours in my mind mix together but when I started placing colours on the page I started to see different combinations of colours that I really liked together such as pink and green. This was really inspiring for me and something I now want to take forward into future projects that I do.
I went to the amusement park, there are a lot of different kinds of facilities. I like the style of the facilities and it gave me many inspirations. They combined many adorable animals and characters with rides. It is very suitable for a child to play, it also can make many good memories over there.
I start with taking pictures of rides, and then I sketch the outline. Next, I try to use my own paint and my own colors cause I want to express my feeling at that time. Thus, I used light colors to present it. For me, these colors can represent my feeling at that time. Moreover, I also use heavy brushstrokes to paint it and used oil pastels to present it. I try to create a hazy feeling because I am very happy and unrealistic at that moment. It is like a dream, so I think oil pastel is a good medium to use. After experiencing the coloring of these ten pictures, it is a good way to present your feeling by using color and brushstrokes.
At the foundation, the teacher will tell us to cut the randan objects and combine them in whatever shape we want, and then draw the pattern. It is a good way to get more inspiration. This way makes many inspirations for me. After drawing the pattern, you can’t tell what it is, it becomes abstract. I think it is the most interesting part.
In this experience, I learn that we can use color and brushstroke to show our feeling and also turn a realistic drawing into an abstract pattern. I like how using different ways to connect my theme.
I have explored pattern by taking some of my initial drawings and experimented using photoshop to do a repeated pattern as well as using collage to combine images. In two of my patterns I experimented with paper weaving, I combined by initial drawings to create a pattern. I have explored shape and made abstract patterns by collaging shape. I enjoyed the collaging technique more so than creating my patterns digitally as I am more familiar with this however I wanted to experiment with the Photoshop skills taught in our IT workshops and challenge myself. I will explore this further with future projects and I’m sure I will gain more confidence with this practice the more I do it. Overall I am happy with my ‘Talking Patterns’ outcomes as I feel I have explored a range of different ways to create pattern and will definitely use these for future projects to explore colour and texture.
the two pictures I took from St Agnes, Cornwall. I was hiking around this area, I feel this is great time for me to take a while, meanwhile, I can get a lot of research not just from London. I also like different techniques for painting that can make my imagination wild and unique. Beside this footpath, I am really appreciate the bench, because that can help people to find the best view, in case they have no patience to find it.
I draw this painting using black paper, black/ white charcoal and eraser.
This is dead rose I took the picture from Hyde Park Rose Garden. This is my first time use Acrylic marker to draw a painting. I feel it is really hard to use a new art tool to create a painting, but I believe this is a good way for me to learn more skills about drawing.

Those oil paintings are made of oil sticks. The inspiration I have from Cornwall when I am hiking behind the sea. From my drawing you can feel the wave is huge, and the cloud is changeable. I like to take some pictures to remember it, even if I always think that is not enough, because people living in the Internet era, people try to make things faster, we almost forgot being slow, take a seat with a pan draw something without digital equipment. I was that kind of person before, I am shy and anxious about drawing in public, one of the reasons is I was not an art student before, so I do not have such experience, however, I have big progress at last summer vacation. I joined in a drawing short course. They give me an experience which I never had.
Those Gel printings are made with mixed media. Some colour is acrylic and gloss gel, and some are not just used for paper, so after that I am thinking about clothes. For this kind of painting, I don’t aurally use too much time to draw. The most difficult thing is you cannot imagine what is happening, as a result, I have to practice a lot, so I can make some printing looks great. On the other hand, the texture is hard to reach. I need to find different texture papers for my gel printing. The first printing is the best one to show those mixed colours, and the second one I add silk to give the unique pattern for this painting.
For this project I decided to go to Columbia Road Flower market. When deciding where to go I was really stuck as London has so much colour wherever you go. However as the focus of this project was to draw colour I wanted to go somewhere I could gain inspiration from shape also, and flowers have some really unique shapes. I really enjoyed drawing the flowers and my surroundings including the busy crowds of people however I found it challenging to draw whilst I was there instead of drawing from a photograph, mainly because it was very busy so it was hard to focus on something for a good amount of time and also because it’s not something I’m used to. However some of the more simple drawings I didn’t take too much time on in comparison to the ones I drew from my photos are some of my favourite ones. This has inspired me to do more initial drawings for my future projects.
In my drawings I experimented with a range of mediums including water colours, soft pastels, chalk pencils and pens. I also explored colour by using different coloured surfaces to draw on; coloured paper, tracing paper and coloured tissue paper. In some of my drawings I focused on creating texture within the petals and leaves of the flowers by the amount of pressure I used with my tools. I found I had to zoom in to one particular area on many of the flower stools as there were so many colours in one space. Although I am pleased with my drawings, I wish I had explored more of the surroundings of Columbia Road rather than focus so much on the flowers; looking back at the photographs I took, there are also many colours within the shops, blue skies and peoples clothing.
Overall this task has inspired me to come out of my comfort zone and draw when I see something inspiring rather than take a photo, I enjoyed working with bright and vibrant colours with mixed media especially coloured chalk to create texture and will explore this further with my future projects.

Reflection:
To begin the ‘Talking Pattern’ task, I looked back at my drawings from the previous task to find inspiration. I began by working digitally using Procreate and duplicated my drawings. I then arranged them to create interesting patterns. I enjoy the pattern using my lavender drawing, as the images fit together to create a chevron pattern. This has inspired many knit ideas for me.
I wanted to experiment more with repeat pattern for this task, duplicating and rotating shapes to create unique compositions. I did this by working both digitally and traditionally using different mediums (fine liners, paint, paint pens and biro). I feel that my pattern of paint tubes was the most successful, as the pattern is simple yet bold. I was able to visualise ideas for how I would develop this pattern into a knit outcome, which I found exciting.
I enjoyed combing different drawings together to create patterns. The pattern inspired by the wall art at Tate Britain, the mural at Serpentine Gallery and the sign in Camden is my favourite. I created this by making a stencil using shapes inspired by my drawings, and rotated it ninety degrees clockwise each time. I then used fine liners and paint pens to add further detail.
To conclude, this task has helped me feel more confident when creating patterns from my existing drawings. I have found new ways to create patterns which I will be using for future projects. To develop, I would have liked to incorporate a wider range of mediums into this task (e.g. yarn and collage to show further texture in the drawings), however I am pleased with my outcomes.
