Daisy Hemmings- Talking Colour

Reflection:
To begin the ‘Talking Colour’ task, I went to Camden and took several photographs of colourful objects that inspired me. When I first began to draw from these photographs, I was spending a lot of time making sure they were detailed and looked similar to the original image. However, I wanted to be more experimental and carefree with my drawing approach. Therefore, for my sign in Camden drawing, I used a variety of different mediums; for example, I used tissue paper to create the effect of the stickers being worn off the sign. I also tried to work more abstract when creating this, which I found challenging but feel worked well. For the statue in Camden Market drawing, I outlined using a continuous line to allow myself to be able to work more loosely.
Looking at these drawings, I was inspired to create observational studies, as I mostly only draw from photographs, which can be very limiting. Doing this, I was able to look closer at scale and proportion, and also identify which colours to be working with. This can be difficult to see from a print out or phone screen. For example, when drawing the plant from home, I saw that some of the leaves were purple, which did not show up in the photograph.
To conclude, this task has helped me to observe colour more closely. It has also allowed me to draw and create mark makings in a variety of ways, that I may not have before.

I have really enjoyed looking at your work and how you have explored colour within your drawings. Using a wide range of colours including light and dark combinations together. In particular in your ‘Talking Colours’ images, I really like the drawing of your Camden Lock bridge image as I like the contrasting colours of the blue and grey together.
To experiment further with your initial drawings of your surroundings you could have used a wider range of mediums to create texture within the drawings, by using chalk/crayons or layering of different mediums to create depth.
Looking at your images in Task 2, I can clearly see the developments of your initial drawings and how you have transformed them into patterns. They give a really graphic feel as if they could be prints! Perhaps in your Talking Patterns images you could have explored using more ways of experimenting with how you create patterns in different ways as I can see you have focused on the digital aspect of repeated pattern; for example, maybe you could have explored texture more by collaging or layering images.
Overall, I really enjoy your work and your variety of colours you have explored during this project. It is nice to see such a range of places explored also as you didn’t explore just one area. I also really liked how her patterns directly linked to her initial drawings as it shows how you can transform just one simple image into a print.
