Chanel Tsan – Talking Colour

At the beginning of Task 1, drawing subjects on the spot was challenging as compared to taking a picture with the camera function on my phone. I had difficulty letting go of the urge to get the drawing perfect but when I started experimenting with different mark markings, focusing on the geometrical shapes, colours and textures, drawing became much more fun and quicker. It was also a great opportunity for me to use various mediums and materials. I found myself liking oil pastels much more after this task due to the bold and thick lines it creates.
The theme ‘Talking Colours’ also had me looking out for colours in my subjects. I was encouraged to broaden my colour palette as wide as possible. For example, in the oil pastel drawing of magnifying glasses, I decided to use pale pastel colours to highlight the reflective surface of the glass. Similarly, I have used dark shades of green and purple for the shadows of the magnifying glasses instead of choosing the colour black. By bringing out these colours in the light and shadows of my subject matter, it makes the final product of my artwork much more exciting and vibrant.
In conclusion, exploring London and drawing whatever interests me without the pressure of it having to look exactly the same helped me to keep an open mind when it comes to being creative, and allowing myself to embrace and appreciate the outcomes of having fun with art.

When looking at Chanel’s work, I particularly liked the themes of each piece. Rather than looking at a place as a whole, she has selected particular items which she felt inspired by, zooming in to look more closely at these objects. This allowed her to capture the detail within, which she explored through a range of mark making and media. Chanel’s exploration of different media is clear, however I think she could benefit from experimenting further. I particularly like the piece that was made using acrylic paint, as it feels very delicate and almost dreamlike- it is very skilfully done. I think acrylic paint is something Chanel should develop, as the soft blend of the medium reflects her style well.
There is a very strong use of colour within Chanel’s work, she is able to use a broad and varied palette whilst still achieving cohesion and a sense of style. The bright, almost fluorescent colours melt together whilst contrasting the darker blacks, creating a sense of depth within the pieces.
Chanel was able to show a variety of style within her pieces, from more detailed, precise drawings such as the first image, to looser, more experimental pieces. I love the loose feeling of the experimental pieces and think it would be beneficial for Chanel to explore this more.
Overall, I loved the way Chanel’s work made mundane, every-day objects appear fun and playful through clever use of colour manipulation and expressive use of media and art style.
