Ashley Li-Talking pattern

I went to the amusement park, there are a lot of different kinds of facilities. I like the style of the facilities and it gave me many inspirations. They combined many adorable animals and characters with rides. It is very suitable for a child to play, it also can make many good memories over there.
I start with taking pictures of rides, and then I sketch the outline. Next, I try to use my own paint and my own colors cause I want to express my feeling at that time. Thus, I used light colors to present it. For me, these colors can represent my feeling at that time. Moreover, I also use heavy brushstrokes to paint it and used oil pastels to present it. I try to create a hazy feeling because I am very happy and unrealistic at that moment. It is like a dream, so I think oil pastel is a good medium to use. After experiencing the coloring of these ten pictures, it is a good way to present your feeling by using color and brushstrokes.
At the foundation, the teacher will tell us to cut the randan objects and combine them in whatever shape we want, and then draw the pattern. It is a good way to get more inspiration. This way makes many inspirations for me. After drawing the pattern, you can’t tell what it is, it becomes abstract. I think it is the most interesting part.
In this experience, I learn that we can use color and brushstroke to show our feeling and also turn a realistic drawing into an abstract pattern. I like how using different ways to connect my theme.

Looking at Ashley’s work, I felt surrealistic as if I were in a dream.
She was obsessed with the atmosphere of the amusement park and expressed her feelings, inspiration, and memories in drawings.
In ‘Talking Colour’, she represented the animals and rides of the amusement park with her happy and unrealistic feelings about them. I was impressed by her use of light pastel colours and fuzzy drawing techniques to describe her fluffy mood. The overall paintings with a vague atmosphere without clear or bold lines allowed me to experience the same feelings as her there.
Pictorializing abstract things such as imagination, sensation, mood or emotion in drawings and patterns requires a lot of imagination and understanding by the viewer. Therefore, It is importatnt to build a consensus to convey what she feels to others well, and her works done it well with using colours, materials and techniques. Also, Especially in the ‘Talking Pattern’, her various wonderful patterns that can’t come up with something specific reflect it very well. Among them, I really enjoyed the 7th~10th patterns. The process by which she cut and combined random patterns was so interesting and the results were fascinating as well. I was really inspired by its process.
Overall,Her work is definitely great. However, to give her some feedback, Although her materials are suitable for her subject, the main purpose of the ‘Intro to’ task is the utilizing a range of mediums and techniques and the exploration of colours and patterns. Therefore, If she had expressed her feelings using more diverse materials and colours, It would have been able to feel more rich and sensuous in her work. I would like to recommend her to use various materials such as acrylic, ink or markers and if she wants to explore more varied methods, I would suggest a research on the works of some surrealist artists.
